GREEN BAY CHI ALPHA

Session 6 - The Six Wins

Win #1: Daily Devotion to Jesus

In short, abiding time with Jesus.

What's the definition of extravagant?
  • The least effect leaders spend 20 minutes a day or less with Jesus
  • The most effective spend at least 1 hour a day
  • What could it look like to tithe your time?

How do we spend time with Jesus?
  • Practices
    • Reading the Word
    • Reading books about the Word (commentaries)
    • Journaling from the Word
    • Reading books about Jesus or faith
    • Prayer (both intentional and continual)
    • Worship (intentional)
  • Personal AND Corporate
  • Daily

The natural cycle:
DISCIPLINE leads to DUTY leads to DELIGHT

Win #2: Every Conversation Leads to Jesus

This is the natural outcome of Daily Devotion to Jesus.

Two ways we miss the mark:
  1. Not talking about spiritual things
    • Other things are not necessarily bad. They can inform and entertain, but they will not transform
  2. Talking about morality instead of Jesus.
    • Leads to legalism and the heresy of believing that we can or must earn our salvation with our behavior

Who are we trying to connect others to?
NOT ourselves
NOT the community
ONLY Jesus

Win #3: Be with Your Core Group Outside of Core Group

The kingdom of God is built through relationship!
Formal settings are not enough to do effective discipleship.

The parable of the seeds:
Only 25% of people stick around. In practical terms if you meet 20 people, only 5 will stick around.
- 5 will choose something else (another ministry or no ministry at all)
- 5 won't like Christians or be offended by something you or XA does
- 5 will want to have fun, but will pull away from hard teachings
- BUT 5 will lean in and become a disciple who makes disciples

The correlation between relationship and commitment
  • If you have a level 1 relationship (only see each other in Core Group, don’t ask about or interact with their life) you will get level 1 transparency (they won’t share their life with you) and commitment (won’t go to FR or SALT or mission trips or join A-Team).
  • However, if you have a level 3 relationship (inviting to your whole life), you will get level 3 transparency and engagement.

What if people won't show up?
1. Find out what they like and go do it.
2. Go scatter some more seed and find more people

Win #4: Honor People to Other People

To honor someone gives weight to the image of God (Imago Dei) in them.
  • Honor transforms creation into splendor
  • Dishonor regresses creation into sorrow

You get what you CELEBRATE!

Dishonor is the native language of our culture. Therefore, we must create and demonstrate a different culture.

Win #5: Delegate Responsibility to Create Maturity

How do we know when to delegate?
  1. Are they being faithful to the knowledge and responsibility they already have?
  2. Can they handle the responsibility at least 70% as well as you can?

The 4-step process of delegation:
  1. I do, you watch
  2. I do, you help
  3. You do, I help
  4. You do, I watch

What can you delegate?
- Bringing snack
- Choosing the worship song
- Coming up with icebreaker questions
- Leading icebreaking questions
- Opening prayer & praying for others
- Planning life group activities
- Leading the Bible study with you

At some point, you WILL leave. Who will you leave behind?

Win #6: The Grit to Keep Going

Life and this year on D-Team is a marathon and not a sprint.

What is grit?
- The ability to keep going when nothing seems to be going right

What helps us to have grit?
  1. Some of it is natural. But all people can learn and practice grit.
  2. Having a growth mindset.
  3. Belief that failure is not a permanant condition.
  4. Refuel with Sabbath and daily devotion to Jesus
  5. Understand the desired future.

What about when you're worn out?
  1. Are you spending daily time with Jesus and Sabbathing? Find space to rest and recover.
  2. Look to the example of Jesus.
  3. Accept that a ministry life includes suffering.
  4. Lean on Jesus
